Incubation

I finally got the go-ahead to start the stimulation drugs. Never thought I'd be so happy to get the news I can start stabbing myself with a needle twice every night.

Actually, Ryan still does the stabbing and it's really not all that bad. I'm just hoping the drugs do their job. Just in case I ever need to remember, I'm doing 225 units Gonal-f and 75 units Menopur.

The revised schedule is now tentatively:
  • shots through March 4th, with monitoring appts. every 3 days
  • "trigger shot" on March 5th (final shot that "triggers" eggs to mature for retrieval)
  • Egg retrieval (surgical procedure under anesthesia) on March 7th
  • Embryo transfer on March 10th or 12th
That's assuming everything goes as planned. Which it never does. So we can pretty much be certain that none of those dates will actually apply.

But you get the point. (Bad joke.)

Would they really retrieve the eggs on a Sunday? Will Tess be with Nana and Papa when you're put under? Do you have to be put under again to transfer the embryos? You are a brave and noble woman, Mrs. Higginbotham!

They will retrieve the eggs on whatever day they are ready. According to their standard protocol, that would be a Sunday. But it could be earlier or later (more likely later) depending how long it takes the eggs to grow.

I haven't asked anyone to watch Tess yet because the date is still up in the air. They don't know it yet, but we'll likely ask Nana & Papa to watch her on retrieval day (we have to be there before the crack of dawn).

Retrieval is no fun, but transfer is surprisingly quick and easy. No anesthesia for that part, although I do have to be on bedrest for 24 hours to give the embryos the best chance at implantation. Ryan will probably need to take off or I'll have to find someone to watch Tess.

Then we're done! Woo hoo!
